Computer Work Stations

The goal of ergonomics is to adapt the job to the pM Kerson rather than making the person adapt to the job. There are risk factors associated with any job. Awareness of these risk factors will help you avoid any potential problems associated with operation of a computer.

RISK FACTORS PREVENTATIVE TECHNIQUES
REPETITION
  • Reduce the number of repetitive motions.
  • Alternate tasks.
  • Take frequent rest breaks.
POSTURE
  • Avoid bending or twisting neck.
  • Support back with chair or pillows.
  • Avoid twisting trunk.
  • Keep shoulders relaxed.
  • Keep elbows at 90 to 110 degree angle when using keyboard.
  • Keep wrist in neutral position.
  • Keep fingers relaxed when keying.
FORCE
  • Avoid prolonged grasping or pinching when using pointing device.
  • Avoid reaching across table for files, etc.
  • Avoid hitting keyboard keys with excessive force.
  • Use electric stapler with large jobs
STATIC LOADS
  • Avoid prolonged grasping of pointing device
  • Avoid resting weight on elbows on table
  • Change position frequently.
ENVIRONMENTAL
  • Reduce extremes of temperature.
  • Reduce glare on tasks.
  • Rest eyes intermittently by refocusing on distant objects.
  • Monitor humidity levels in offices.
  • Reduce high noise levels.
