Selecting a Chair
Chair fit is important when selecting a chair.
You should consider the size and shape of your back when choosing a chair. A single
size and type of chair is not appropriate for all tasks and cannot suit all body
shapes and sizes.
When you sit to perform a task, your spine
is most comfortable when its in "neutral posture", an
upright position about halfway between full forward bending and backward
arching. A chair can help you maintain this position if it provides proper
support.
For the most comfort and best fit, the chair should
have the following adjustment options:
SEAT:
- Height: The seat height should adjust to fit the height of
the user and/or the work surface.
- Tilt: The seat should adjust to a variety of selected angles
to allow for a comfortable posture for different tasks. Some chairs offer a rocking
motion.
- Depth: The depth of the seat should adjust to provide
support for your legs. There should be a 1" to 2" space between the front edge
of the seat and the back of the knees. Ability to slide the seat backward and/or forward
will allow you to set the proper depth position.
BACK:
- Height: The back should adjust up and down to fit the curves
of your spine to provide support and comfort. Adjustable lumbar support is often necessary
to accommodate flat, average or deep spinal curves.
- Contour: The back of the chair should make full contact with
your back when you are in your normal working position. If you recline, a back that
extends up to your upper back or even a neck support may be indicated.
- Angle: The back should adjust independently from the seat
tilt to provide back support for a variety of work positions such as reclining or leaning
forward.
ARMS:
- Arms are useful to provide additional upper extremity and
back support when taking breaks or pauses between writing or keying tasks.
- Height: If you choose a chair with arms,
they should be adjustable to your height. Your arms should be able to
rest on the chair arms with your shoulders in a relaxed position.
- Width: Inward and outward adjustment provides additional
personal fit. This is especially important with smaller or larger than average size
individuals.
Maintaining good posture is important to prevent back and
neck problems. Use of an ergonomically sound chair combined with good work habits and good
posture habits can help you work more efficiently and comfortably. |
