A. Task Chairs Overview
A lot of time is spent in our office chairs. Having a chair that fits and supports a neutral posture along with taking regular breaks can reduce potential discomfort. To select a supportive chair consider how well you fit the seat height, seat width, seat depth, lumbar support, armrests, and recline or tilt functions. The chair options below exceed established UC Ergonomic Workgroup criteria for office task chairs. All are highly adjustable and provide support when working in neutral posture.

The Series 1 is a fully adjustable mesh back chair. The recline tilt adjustment is weight activated. Options include: height-adjustable lumbar support and pivoting, height adjustable armrests. The back support is slightly lower than the other models shown here and may be more appropriate for smaller to average-sized users. |
The Amia meets all UC selection criteria and has become one of UCLA's standards. The recline function has adjustable tension and can be locked. Optional 4-way adjustable arms allow for pivoting in and out, up and down, side to side, and back and forth. Optional lumbar support slides up and down. The Amia Air has the same mechanism and adjustments as the Amia with a slightly different contoured mesh back. Adjustable lumbar support is available with the 3D micro knit fabric. The 4-way adjustable arms are also available. |
Highly adjustable with a tall back. The upper back support and lumbar support can be increased or decreased by adjusting the recline tension. The optional adjustable pivoting armrests have a large range of adjustment that includes the ability to adjust for height, side to side, and back & forth. B. Keyboard Trays Overview
For areas that are not able to incorporate height adjustable desks, a retractable and height adjustable keyboard tray can offer a cost effective way to address surfaces that are too high. The addition of a keyboard tray will turn a fixed height worksurface to an adjustable one that will enable the user to lean back in their chair and engage the backrest and work at a relaxed elbow height when using the keyboard and mouse. A proper monitor arm will allow the user to easily adjust their monitor(s) vertically and horizontally to the correct height and distance. Along with the increased adjustability, a monitor arm can help free up coveted desk space and is generally preferable when you have a standing option. The monitor arms below are all highly adjustable and designed for VESA compatible monitors. If you work on a laptop you should be using an external mouse. Selecting a well fitted mouse considers the tasks performed, computer hardware, and size of the hand. A well fitted mouse will fit comfortably in the hand with the fingers in a relaxed grip. Measure the hand and compare to the specifications in the table below.
Hand Measurements
Tools needed: Ruler or measuring tape
Mouse Height: This is usually the longest distance of the mouse and is measured from the buttons to the base when the mouse is placed in the typical position for use on a desk. To determine if a mouse height will fit your hand, measure the distance from the tip of your middle finger to the center of the palm. Optimal fit will have the hand measurement be plus or minus 0.5" to 0.75" of the mouse height.
Mouse Width: This is the second longest distance of the mouse and is measured across from left to right when the mouse is placed in the typical position for use on a desk. To determine if a mouse width will fit your hand, start at the edge of the palm closets to the index finger and measure the distance along palm to the knuckle of the ring finger. Optimal fit will have the hand measurement be plus or minus 0.5" to 0.75" of the mouse width.
Mouse Depth: This is the shortest distance of the mouse and can also refer to the height when the mouse is placed in the typical position for use on a desk. The depth of the mouse will effect the grips curvature when placed on the mouse. A mouse with more depth will cause the hand to form a cup while less depth will allow the hand to lay flat over of the mouse. As such the mouse depth will shorten the height and width needed for the mouse to fit comfortably in your hand. No direct measurement of the hand is needed, but depth should be considered in adjusting the 0.5" to 0.75" variability in height and width.

There has been a substantial increase in web conferences over the last few years. A good quality webcam and stable internet service have become necessities for remote and in-person office workers. External webcams generally provide higher resolution and better microphone quality than the integrated cameras and microphones on most laptops. Some webcams also offer additional options such as the ability to pan and zoom. The selections below have plug and play technology and are easy to install. Users whose priority is video conferencing should consider overall quality, and ability to purchase through UCLA's contracted suppliers.
